When David and I travel, since we fly standby, many times we will fly into a city and stay overnight in order to set ourselves up for a flight to our desired destination the next morning. On one of our trips, we decided our best chance on standby would be to fly out of New York. We learned that a new hotel had just opened right on the airport premises at New York’s JFK airport, which is the airport we needed to fly out of. We liked the idea of staying right on the airport, as we would not have to get a shuttle or transportation to/from the hotel–we would just have to walk from the hotel to the actual terminal via an extension walkway and Airtrain. The added bonus, and the part that we were most excited about, was that the old TWA terminal at JFK is what was transformed to create this hotel, appropriately named, TWA Hotel. Here is a picture looking towards the front of the hotel:

Now the reason we were so excited about experiencing this hotel is special, mainly to David. He worked for TWA from 1989-1997, and even spent some of his time with them working in this very terminal! I got the super inside scoop of the new hotel, as everywhere we ventured David would have a story of that part of the building and what it was like all those years ago.
Inside the Hotel
The main focal point of the lobby is the “Classic Solari split-flap message board with authentic original mechanical operation”.

When arriving inside, we were greeted by “airline staff”. As you can see, all of the employees working at the hotel wear vintage TWA uniforms from various departments. Here are some of the uniforms they have on display:

The hotel main lobby is set up to resemble the TWA Flight Center, with restaurants, bars and retail stores among it’s tenants. There is also meeting and event space, a gym, and to top it all off there is an infinity pool, bar and observation deck on the rooftop where there is a fabulous view of one of the runways. There are two main hotel wings on each side of the center, with over 500 guestrooms, some of which also have views of the runway where you can see flights taking off! Here is the rooftop pool area and bar:
Connie
Another feature of the hotel is outside on the “tarmac”. It is a Lockheed Constellation “Connie“ L-1649A airplane transformed into a cocktail lounge. Here is David standing by the propeller of “Connie”:

As with the vintage uniform displays, there are many exhibits throughout the hotel showcasing authentic TWA memorabilia from days past. Another exhibit was the desk of Howard Hughes, one of the early owners of TWA.
Here are some photos of our room:
Retro meets Chic
As you can see by the photos, the TWA Hotel is very retro with an array of vintage items from TWA’s rich history. It also provides a “chic” atmosphere for all those who visit. David and I enjoyed our stay at the hotel, and would highly recommend if you are flying out of New York, or get stuck there overnight due to a weather delay or cancelled flight, that you consider staying at the TWA Hotel instead of paying the costs associated with getting a cab/transportation to a hotel in the city. You won’t be disappointed. It is definitely an experience you will remember!
