When David and I started dating, one of the first places we visited together was Williamsburg. Williamsburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of our home state of Virginia. It was founded in 1632, and is rich in history which dates back to the American Revolution. Colonial Williamsburg is Virginia’s largest tourist destination (based on attendance), along with Jamestown and Yorktown both close by. For our weekend visit we did go to Colonial Williamsburg, walked the cobblestone streets, and ate lunch at a cute tavern. However, most of our time was spent at the Williamsburg Winery and Wedmore Place, which is a “very elegant European style country vineyard hotel featuring 28 uniquely designed rooms and suites”. It has an on-site restaurant, The Cafe Provencal, as well as The Gabriel Archer Tavern, which is a great place to enjoy lunch. Although our visit was in the spring, most rooms have working fireplaces for use in cooler weather, adding to the ambiance of the room itself. The focal point of the property, however, is the winery.

We purchased a package which included a tour of the winery, and a tasting afterwards. Our tour proved to be an enjoyable day. The group was approximately 12-15 people, with David being the only male in the group other than a young 20-something couple who kept to themselves during the course of the tour. I found myself watching David interact with the group more than I paid attention to the tour guide, and the information being presented. He asked so many questions, and kept the entire group (including the female tour guide) laughing at his quick wit. As we moved from room to room, David would hang back and hold the door open for all the ladies (including me). This did not go unnoticed by the group. By the end of the tour, and a few glasses of wine, several women mentioned to me how lucky I was to have such a sweet man who not only was willing to do something like this with me, but who enjoyed the tour just as much, if not more, than we all did!
I didn’t take many pictures during the tour, but some points of interest included the beautiful area they have available for wedding receptions or parties, including an outdoor veranda where the wedding can take place along the vineyard edge. Another favorite was the Wessex Hundred Wine Shop where we could purchase our favorite wines after the tasting was over. Other items purchased included lavender lotion and soap, two of our favorites.
Staying at the Wedmore Place/Williamsburg Winery is a great weekend adventure. Packages and Specials are offered all year round, and have many different options. Check out the website and plan your get away soon!!
